On October 3, 1932, Iraq was admitted as a member of the League of Nations, and henceforth it could truly represent itself as an independent state, but British involvement in Iraqi affairs did not end at that point. In September 1933, Faisal died in a hospital in Switzerland following complications from a heart attack. The 48-year-old was succeeded on the throne of Iraq by his son Ghazi bin Faisal, who would rule for six years before his death in a car accident. He would be succeeded by his son, Faisal II of Iraq, who ascended to the throne at the age of three. The child was briefly overthrown in a pro-Axis coup d'état that prompted an immediate reinvasion by the British.
